Distress Line FAQ


How many calls does the Distress Line average in one month?

There are approximately 1,500 callers to the Crisis Support Centre’s Distress Line every month. All are at some level of distress, and about 30% of them are in crisis.


Why do people call the Distress Line?

People call the Distress Line when they need someone to listen. Our callers may be experiencing crisis or distress for a number of reasons: relationship troubles, mental health concerns and financial issues are examples of things that our callers typically reach out about.

Some of our callers may be at a point where they are experiencing suicidal thoughts or are trying to cope with an abusive or violent situation.

No matter what type of issue a person is dealing with, the Distress Line is here to listen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. If you need someone to listen, please call us at 780-482-4357.


How does the Distress Line help?

All Distress Line Listeners complete a comprehensive training program before taking calls on the lines. Our Listeners are non-judgmental, understanding and compassionate individuals who volunteer their time to support people in the community who are experiencing crisis.

In addition to listening to a caller's main concern, Listeners discuss each caller's strengths and resources and can also offer information and referrals to community services and programs that can provide further support.

For callers who may be at risk for suicide and/or interpersonal violence, Listeners are able to discuss safety and can discuss other crisis based services which may be helpful.

Finally, if you are concerned about someone in your life who may be at risk for suicide and/or interpersonal violence, the Distress Line can offer you some education on how to support people at risk, as well as discussing what supports are available for you.


How can I get involved?

The Distress Line is always looking for new volunteers! To learn more about our volunteer opportunities, or to apply to become a Distress Line Listener, please go the The Support Network. The Support Network is the parent organization of the Crisis Support Centre and is responsible for all volunteer inquiries.

If you don't have the time or interest in volunteering to answer the Distress Line, you can consider making a donation to the Crisis Support Centre. A donation of $50.00 helps us answer one Distress Line call.

Finally, you can get involved by spreading the word about the Distress Line. If you know of someone who may be experiencing a crisis or distress in their lives, encourage them to call the Distress Line. It's confidential and available 24/7.
